2014 award winners

In 2014 the Foundation received 47 applications. 11 candidates attended for interview and a further 10 candidates were given a small disbursement in recognition of their application and project. The interview panel from the Trustees was Mr Geoffrey Glazer, Consultant Surgeon, Dr Michael Harding General Practitioner and Susan Smith Healthcare Executive. In total we gave £60,000 in grants to 11 candidates and £10,000 to ten candidates – total £70,000

Zaid Awad

Zaid is a Specialist Registrar in otolaryngology and is currently at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London. He will be going to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia in February 2015 on a Head and Neck Fellowship. In particular he will focus on trans-oral laser surgery to the larynx and robotic assisted transoral microsurgery as well as the multi disciplinary management required in advanced head and neck cancer.

Ajay Belgaumkar

Ajay is a post-CCT Senior Fellow in HPB Surgery and Liver Transplantation and is currently at the Royal Free Hospital, London. He will be undertaking a six month International Laparoscopic HPB Fellowship from November 2014 at the Institut Mutualiste Montsouris, Paris, France.

Konstantinos Doufekas

Konstantinos is a Sub-Specialty Fellow in gynaecological oncology at University College Hospital, London. He will spend two months from June 2015 at the Department of Gynaecological Oncology, Odensee University Hopsital, Odensee, Denmark. His project is the use of near-infrared (INR) flouresence imaging for detecting the sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) in patients with gynaecological cancer.

Sanjay Gupta

Sanjay is a Specialist Registrar 8 in Trauma and Orthopaedic on the West of Scotland rotation. In July 2015 he will go to the Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Canada for twelve months. He has a Clinical Fellowship in Musculoskeletal Oncology

Adel Helmy

Adel is a Neurosurgical Specialist Registrar at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. In February 2015 he will go to Australia for twelve months as a Skull Base Fellow at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane.

Faisal Idress

Faisal is an Honary Senior Glaucoma Fellow at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, West Midlands. He will be extending his experience in advanced surgical techniques for complex cataract surgery and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery in adults and paediatrics. He will visit two centres over a six month period commencing in September 2015. He will visit the Medical University of South Africa and University of Limpopo Medunsa Campus Pretoria, South Africa and the Kensington Eye Institute, University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Damir Kosutic

Damir is a Locum Consultant in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Christie Hospital, Manchester. He has a fourteen week tour of 2 centres starting in February 2015. At the Division of Reconstructive Microsurgery, Department of Plastic Surgery at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Taiwan he will learn advanced techniques for free lymph node transfer for microsurgical treatment of lymphoedema and at the Center for Microsurgical Breast Reconstruction New York USA he will learn the techniques for Profunda Artery Perforator flaps (PAP).

Weng Koon Edward Peng

Weng is a ST8 Specialty Registrar in cardiothoracic surgery at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle and is currently a Fellow in Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Colorado Hospital USA. IN August 2015 he will spend three months at the German Paediatric Heart Centre, Sankt Augustin, Germany. He has a Fellowship in Paediatric Valve Repair.

Shashi Prasad Kajampady Rama

Shashi is in his final year as a Specialist Registrar at Arrowe Park Hospital, Wirral University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. From December 2014 he will spend six months between the two European Sialendoscopy Training centres in Geneva Switzerland and Lyon France. He will train in new techniques and sialendoscopy for the management of salivary gland disorders.

Adam Sierakowski

Adam is a StR Plastic Surgery at Imperial Healthcare Trust, London. He has already embarked on a six month Fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery at the Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, India.

Andrew Tarnaris

Adam is a Specialist Registrar on the Higher Surgical Training Rotation at the West Midlands Deanery and currently is undertaking a Clinical Fellowship in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery at the Toronto Western Hospital, Toronto, Canada. From July 2015 he will spend a further twelve months at Toronto Western to learn the technique of Focused Ultrasound in the brain.
