The 2012 Award Winners

In 2012 ten candidates were selected for interview. These candidates were interviewed by a panel of HCA Foundation Trustees, Mr. Geoffrey Glazer Consultant Surgeon, Dr Michael Harding General Practitioner and Susan Smith. A total grant amount of £65,000 was allocated.

Nicholas Alexander

Nic is planning to be a dedicated paediatric oncology surgeon and was at Great Ormond St at the time of his application. He will be going to Texas Children’s Hospital, USA and will be gaining a greater knowledge of and assisting in the development of Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC). This technique is used to manage otherwise untreatable disseminated peritoneal malignancy.

Hywell Dafydd

Hywel is a SpR in Plastic Surgery on the All Wales Training Programme and is undertaking a Fellowship at the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan for brachial plexus and upper limb reconstruction and facial reanimation. His project is to specifically focus on the microsurgical reconstruction of the upper limb.

John Ferris

John is a Specialty Registrar on the Scotland Rotation for Emergency Medicine. He will undertake a Fellowship in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine with the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service, London.

Jonathan Goodfellow

Jonathan is a Specialty Registrar in Ophthalmology at Royal United Hospital Bath. He will undertake a Fellowship at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Australia. He will develop his experience in sub-specialist glaucoma and in particular learn more about the implantation of glaucoma drainage devices.

Jong Kim

Jong is a Clinical Lecturer in Plastic Surgery on the Eastern Deanery Higher Surgical Training Programme. His 3 month project is free style perforator based microsurgical reconstruction and minimal access surgery for regional nodal lymphadenectomy. He will undertake this at the Hanyang University Medical Centre in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Seoul, Korea.

Siong Seng Liau

Siong is a Clinical Lecturer and Honary Specialist Registrar V1 in Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. He will undertake a Surgeon-Scientist Fellowship in Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgical Oncology at the Toronto General Hospital and Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center .

Aziz Momin

Aziz is a SR and SpR in cardio-thoracic surgery at the Hammersmith Hospital, London. Through his Fellowship under the supervision of Prof G El-Khoury at St Luc Hospital Brussels he will learn advanced techniques in aortic and mitral valve repairs encompassing these techniques in a minimally invasive manner.

Paul Stimpson

Paul is an ENT Registrar ST7 in Head and Neck Surgery at Whipps Cross Hospital, London. He will undertake a 12 month Fellowship at Monash Medical Centre, Melbourne, Australia. . He will focus on complex reconstructive techniques and have exposure to the management of advanced skin cancer. He will also focus on learning more about alternative healthcare delivery systems and working practices.

Mrinal Supriya

Mrinal has an appointment as a Consultant Head and Neck Surgeon at Ninewells University Hospital Dundee. He will attend Wayne University Hospital, Detroit, USA. He will learn additional skills in laser and robotic surgery for robotic surgical resection of laryngeal and oropharyngeal cancer, and skull base lesions, minimal access endoscopic and robotic thyroid and parathyroid surgery and microvascular reconstruction of ablative defects.

Martin Tisdall

Martin is a Paediatric Neurosurgery Fellow at Great Ormond St Hospital, London. He will spend 12 months at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada. He will expand his skills in the use of magneto-encephalography to guide neurosurgical treatment of paediatric epilepsy.
