The 2007 Award Winners

In 2007, HCA International Foundation Travelling Scholarships were awarded to the following candidates.

Sasha Burn

Specialist Registrar in Neurosurgery, Queen's Hospital, Romford, Essex. Special interest in Paediatric Neurosurgery. Has chosen to visit the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada, renowned for the management of children with neurosurgical conditions. Subject of study: All aspects of paediatric neurosurgery including operating techniques and management skills, particularly of complex craniofacial conditions and the per-operative use of ultrasound in neurosurgery.

Shehan Hettiaratchy

Aesthetic Fellow, The Wellington Hospital, London, UK. Special interest in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Hand. Has chosen to attend the Department of Hand and Peripheral Nerve Surgery, Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, Australia, world-famous as a centre for innovation in hand surgery and teaching. Subject of study: The reconstruction of congenital hand deformities and management of brachial plexus injuries.

Chris Hobbs

Specialist Registrar in Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery, Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, UK. Special interest in Head and Neck Surgery. Has chosen to visit St Vincent's Hospital and St Vincent's Private Hospital, Sydney, Australia, where management of head and neck cancer is in advance of that generally available in the UK. Subject of study: Advanced head and neck surgery.

Andrew Jowett

Foot and Ankle Fellow, Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia. Special interest in foot and ankle surgery. Has chosen to attend Olympic Park Medical Centre, Melbourne and Epworth and Mercy Hospitals, Melbourne. The Olympic Park Medical Centre has a good reputation for the management of sporting injuries, the Epworth and Mercy hospitals are Level 1 trauma units. Subject of study: The management of exercise-induced compartment syndrome in the medial compartment of the foot.

Marc Pacifico

Specialist Registrar in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, West Sussex. Special interest in breast, head and neck, and lower limb reconstructive plastic surgery. Has chosen to attend The Melbourne Institute of Plastic Surgery, Australia, renowned for its advanced management of skin cancer cases and plastic reconstructive surgery techniques. Subject of study: Furthering surgical skills in aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.

Hugh Paterson

Specialist Registrar in General Surgery, The Western General Hospital, Edinburgh. Special interest in Coloproctology. Has chosen to attend the University Clinic St Luc, Brussels, Belgium, where the use of laparoscopic coloproctology is in advance of the UK. Subject of study: Laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

Rikin Trivedi

Specialist Registrar in Neurosurgery at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, UK. Special interest in Complex Spine Surgery and Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery. Has chosen to attend the Department of Neurosurgery, Lois Pope Life Centre, Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami, USA, which has the second largest volume of spinal surgery procedures in the USA and an excellent track record in training. Subject of study: Investigation of advances in complex spine and cerebrovascular neurosurgery.
